About Patch and Dot

Patch and Dot is a quilting and crafting blog. Posts are mostly quilting tutorials and round ups of the best patterns and quilting classes that I've tried on my quilting journey. You'll also find quilt-along news, swaps, and pattern reviews, with a focus on simple, modern quilt projects (bonus points if there are hearts and rainbows involved). Visit the Patch and Dot shop for modern baby quilt and mini quilt patterns.

This pattern was so efficient, lots of batching (y This pattern was so efficient, lots of batching (you can see this block is the inverse of one I posted earlier), very little waste, and once you get going you can just sew and sew without having to keep consulting the pattern, which is nice! #quiltbuzzbingo #solidsquilt #quiltblock #modernquilting
When you’re happy with your test block but now r When you’re happy with your test block but now realize you don’t have nearly enough fabric for the rest of the words 🤦🏻‍♀️. Paper piecing really is a “you need more fabric than you think” endeavour! I’m determined sew my stash this year and buy as little as possible, so mini quilt here we come 💕 #blackletterquilt #alphabetquilt #alphabetquiltpattern
The best way to do paper piecing if you’re doing The best way to do paper piecing if you’re doing multiples of any block: trace onto freezer paper! With this method, you’ll press fabric to the waxy side of the paper, fold the paper and sew just to one side of the fold, rather than through the paper, so no mess of paper bits to clean up at the end. Don’t forget to mark your pieces, both the number order and the fabric (here I just wrote “o” for the foreground pieces that make the letter o). #paperpiecing #blackletterquilt #quilting

I'd saved these Meadow fabrics by Leah Duncan forever, but not only do I think it will be worth it, I've really been making an effort over the past few years to have more of a mindset of not always putting the fun/rewarding things off. #sewmystash #jffichallenge2023 #sugarandspicequilt

This is a classic block that @megancollins_c has l This is a classic block that @megancollins_c has levelled up with her excellent pattern. It uses a combination of traditional and paper piecing, with the latter making it easier to create a nice crisp block and sharp points … while still having a really sweet old fashioned feeling. #quilting #sugarandspicequilt #quiltblock

This is #blackletterquilt printed at 50% scale. Th This is #blackletterquilt printed at 50% scale. The blocks have a certain sweetness at this size (if I do say so myself!), but I do have a tip when working at these smaller sizes in paper piecing. Normally I use the freezer paper method for my blocks. Mainly because of how clean it is (literally - there is nothing like just peeling the waxy paper away from the back and not having to deal with hundreds of little paper bits). EXCEPT: when I scale my blackletters down. Being able to sew the tiny pieces straight onto the paper just gives that extra stability you need, and you don't need to worry about anything sliding out of alignment or away from the template altogether. #fpp #paperpiecing #paperpieced #alphabetquilt #valentinequilt

This quilt pattern for #quiltbuzzbingo has really This quilt pattern for #quiltbuzzbingo has really taught me the value of pre-cutting. Typically I'm a pretty impatient quilter, always wanting to do a test block (or three), "just to see," and cut out one at a time rather than all in a batch. But I think I'm a convert, it really does speed things up! #modernquilting #checkerboardquilt #quiltblock
