My Ribbon Letters alphabet quilt is complete! This week I finished a project that I’ve been working on for quite a while. It’s been so fun coming up with individual block patterns for each letter of the alphabet. The original inspiration: the dimension and shading created by vintage printed ribbons.

Alphabet Quilt Pattern

This one is going in my nieces’ playroom and I think it would also make a good alphabet quilt pattern for a baby’s room (say, a pastel version as a baby shower gift). Depending on the layout and the amount of border you add, it could even work for a toddler-sized bed.

The Fabric

Rifle Paper’s Les Fleur collection from Cotton + Steel two seasons ago went into each and every letter (for the ribbon “fronts”), with complimentary solids (for the ribbon “backs”).

You could also make this pattern using tone-on-tone solids, or a tighter palette overall. For example, in the next version I make I’ll be using just three colours in repetition, with a print and a solid in different tones of the same colour for each block.

The background is an unbleached cotton (“Natural”) from Kona. And the binding is from the “American Made” line (I got mine at Gotham Quilts). It’s great because it’s fabric made in North America (hard to find) and when washed it takes on a nice texture and chambray-like feel.

A tip to make your fabric go farther

All of the solids in this quilt are made from a bundle of coordinating Kona solids that I got at The Workroom in Toronto. The bundle was curated especially to go with the Rifle Paper collection, and it’s such a great way to make a favourite set of prints stretch farther … in fact I think I have more than enough left of the fat quarter bundle I started with to make another small quilt.
