Sharing a little Halloween quilt work in progress this week. Have you heard of the Spooky September Sew Along? This year I realized I had enough Halloween (or Halloween-adjacent) fabric to participate. Most of the themed fabrics are Ruby Star Society, Cotton and Steel, and Art Gallery Fabrics, and I’m mixing in some Kona cotton solids, Riley Blake Swiss dots, and mini woven ginghams.

Here are the first few blocks I’ve sewn. This one is a free pattern from Bonjour Quilts, a Halloween Skull block that is really fun and quick to put together.

The next is Sugar and Spice by Megan Collins – another free pattern. I love this one because it’s a version of a traditional block, but using the paper piecing technique to help you get those crisp points. As you can see below, it’s also very versatile, with lots of different designs possible depending on how you position the blocks.

The next one is Gilded Cage by Massey Crafts. It looks very intricate but is actually pretty straightforward to paper piece.

This “Moth Eclipse” block is one of my all time favourites from Woolly Petals. It’s paper pieced and one of the things I love about it is that the illustration has a style all its own, it’s really original in a world where a lot of FPP starts to look the same after a while.

I also sewed up a couple of blocks from Pen and Paper Patterns’ Forest Fungi quilt, one each of the mushroom and leaf blocks.

This “Blink” block is from a free pattern by Tula Pink. She has several specifically Halloween themed fabric collections but I just pulled all the pinks, oranges, purples and creams from a jelly roll from one of her sewing-themed fabric collections.

I also added a perennial favourite, Kate Basti’s Tall Tales book block. I’m usually pretty bad a remembering to save selvedge, but by some miracle I had this bit of old Cotton and Steel Lil Monsters and it was perfect for the book’s spine.

And finally a few mini quilts from previous years, which I found while digging up all my halloween themed fabrics. You’ll notice I’ve got another Halloween Skull Block, and the BOO quilt is made with my Ribbon Letters pattern.
