With the cozy season upon us, I realized I never shared the quilted vest I made for my mom. This is based on a pattern from Purl Soho. (I actually combined two of their patterns, using Quilted Wool Vest for the shape, and Quilted Vest for the most part for the quilting and sewing method.) The fabrics are Rifle Paper cotton lawn for the exterior, and Essex Linen in lilac for the interior. (You could make this reversible depending on which method you use to finish the shoulders.) The lawn has a lovely soft feel to it, and the linen has great texture and stability.

As garments go I would describe this as an easy-ish project. Honestly one of my main criteria when looking for garment patterns is “no zippers or button holes” (check!) to make it as un-fussy as possible. Plus finishing the vest with bias binding is a real plus for those of us more comfortable making quilts than clothing.

Doll vests

And, just for fun, here are a couple of vests I sewed up for my nieces’ American Girl-sized dolls. For these I used Simplicity pattern 8818. I used pre-quilted fabric from Japan to speed things along, left off the collar, and finished with bias tape (Cotton and Steel on the left, Liberty of London on the right), just as I did for the Purl Soho vest.
