My favourite way to make stockings is to pair a quilted stocking pattern with a quilt block to personalize it. Doing this is usually as simple as turning your quilt block into a panel for the front of the stocking by adding borders to size. Getting the relative proportions right is really the only trick, so here I’ve rounded up my favourite quilt block + DIY stocking combos that require no special sizing adjustments. (Two of the patterns in this post are free!)
Chubby stocking plus a paper pieced Christmas block
First up is a project you may have seen in Issue 130 of Love Patchwork and Quilting magazine, pairing the super cute Chubby Christmas Stocking by Ma and Me Designs with my This Is the One block. More detailed instructions over here but the main thing to note is to use the large size stocking (four sizes are included in the Chubby Stocking pattern).
Free quilted stocking plus blackletter initial
Patchwork & Poodles free stocking pattern is a perennial favourite. The small version works perfectly with both uppercase and lowercase Blackletter blocks, which you can get separately or as a bundle. The small version is pictured below but note that the pattern also includes a really fun large version that’s on the jumbo side.

Finally – because stocking shape preferences are as individual as people – here’s a mashup that requires no paper piecing at all. The free stocking template is from Sunny Day Supply and the letters are traditionally pieced quilt blocks from my Ribbon Letters pattern. This is a quick enough sew that you can make it for the whole family (pictured below, by @rosebudandpenny).
